Small Apartment Living-Room Layout: A Fit-First Formula
A small living room does not need miniature furniture everywhere. It needs a clear priority, one strong anchor, and a protected route through the space.
Design my actual roomMap the no-furniture zones
Mark door swings, radiator clearance, vents, windows, closet access, and the main route. These fixed constraints are more important than an empty wall’s total length.
Place the sofa by depth as well as width
A wide but shallow sofa can preserve more usable floor than a shorter deep sofa. Plot the full footprint and leave a clear path in front or behind it.
Let the rug connect the seating
A rug that reaches the front legs of the sofa and chair creates one room. A small rug floating under only the coffee table can make the same floor feel fragmented.
Choose a table from the remaining clearance
After placing the sofa and rug, reserve roughly 14–18 inches at the seat and at least 30 inches in the main crossing route. The shape of the leftover zone tells you whether the table should be round, oval, narrow, or omitted.
